Can't decide on whether you should buy a new or reconditioned stairlift? This page should aid in helping you decide.

Cheap is not always cheerful

If something is too good to be true, it probably isn't. The dealers who offer to get you the cheapest used Stairlift may be giving you a Stairlift that is unsuitable for you and your needs. When buying a new stairlift from Acorn, you know that it will be manufactured specifically to you and your needs. This means that you'll be receiving brand new parts and a 12 month warranty as standard.

What to look out for

If you spot any of the following things when someone is trying to sell you a Stair Lift, it might be more trouble than its worth.

  • Is Cable, Chain or Rope hauled - The Stairlift will be noisy, jolty movement and oily
  • Has a Trailing Mains Power Cable - Can be unreliable, won't work in a power cut and will be time consuming to install
  • Is not DC Powered - The Stairlift will lack smoothness whilst in motion and cannot be operated when there is a power cut
  • Does not have a Swivel Seat - The Stair lift is outdated and potentially hazardous particularly at the top of your stairs. Its also difficult to get on and off the Stairlift
  • Does not have a Rack & Pinion Drive - It will lack stability and be noisy
  • Does not have an Overspeed Governor - The Stair lift is unprotected from an uncontrolled descent, if a major drive system failure should occur. If a major drive system fails the stairlift could plummet to the foot of the stairway, with unthinkable consequences
  • Does not have a status display system - It will be impossible for you to diagnose a fault without a costly home visit each time there is a fault with the stair lift

Which is superior? New or Used?

Because an Acorn Stairlift is tailor made to be the perfect solution for troubles getting up and down your stairs it will be the superior option. Why is a new Stairlift the superior option? Keep reading!

  • A new Acorn Stairlift will be specifically made to fit your Staircase
  • A new Acorn Stairlift will be customised to suit your personal needs
  • A new Acorn Stairlift will come with 12 months warranty
  • Replacement parts will be readily available and still in production
  • A new Acorn Curved Stairlift will fit to your stairs properly
  • The Acorn Curved 80 has a custom built rail to fit your staircase perfectly

Why a reconditioned Stairlift can be trouble

Because a Stairlift is reconditioned (used), there can be problems you will naturally encounter such as the following:

  • A lesser warranty package, if any
  • Curved Stairlifts are difficult to transfer across staircases
  • Parts are harder to come by, if the Stairlift is an old model
  • Older Stairlift models may be unsupported by a local dealer because the model is obsolete
  • May require frequent services as parts will be worn, which would result in longer wait times for help
