The Seat Assembly

The Seat Assembly (Fig.8) includes the seat chassis and plastic mouldings, upholstered pads (where fitted), folding seat base and armrests, one of which incorporates the manual controls (toggle switch) and diagnostic status lights (Light Emitting Diodes) and the seat swivel lever.
The seat assembly now needs to be fixed to the seat post on the carriage. If not already in place, fit the seat swivel index plate cover by simply sliding it over the seat post, so that the seat swivel micro-switch is visible through the small circular hole in the cover. Position the seat so that it faces across the staircase and the seat post locates in the off-set ‘ring’ in the underside of the seat chassis.
To properly locate the seat assembly onto the seat post, fold the armrests and seat base into the upright position and work the seat back and forth whilst applying gentle downward pressure. At the same time depress the seat swivel lever, (Fig.9).
Connect the seat/carriage control lead, by pushing the two pieces of the connector together and securing with the screw collar, fitted to the connector attached to the seat assembly (Fig.10).
Next, locate the red plug on the top of the carriage marked "Battery Isolation" and insert in it's socket. Locate the key, fitted to the underside of the seat arm and turn to the "Go" position and the stair lift will become operational (though by battery power only).
Note: The stair lift will only be operational if the seat is locked in the riding position (i.e. facing across the stairway) and the green LED is illuminated. If the yellow LED is illuminated the seat swivel lever should be depressed and the seat turned, so that it is locked in the riding position.
Using the toggle switch in the direction of travel, move the lift 3 or 4 steps down the staircase. There will be a safety delay of approx 3 seconds, before the stairlift begins to move. Remove the red battery isolation plug to silence the audible "battery not charging" warning.
If dealing with a "stock length" rail, or the upper charge point is not fitted, it now needs to be installed. [Instructions here].
Connecting the Transformer
The plug-in transformer that is supplied may have a male connector plug attached. If so, cut the male connector plug off with wire cutters and discard. Separate the two wires and strip back the plastic sheath on each wire, exposing ¼ inch of copper wire.
Connect the transformer wires to the connector block, so that the blue rail wires oppose the black transformer wire and the brown rail wires oppose the black/gray transformer wire (Fig.16)
Finally, tuck the connector block and loose wiring into the inside of the upper rail section, so that only the transformer wires protrude from the upper end of the rail and snap the rail-end cover into position.
With the plug-in transformer connected to the mains supply, the rail charge points are now energised with a safe 15 volts AC.
Fixing to Staircase
The entire assembly now needs to be fixed to the staircase. Move the rail as close to the edge of the staircase as possible - but ensuring that the seat back does not come into contact with the wall.
Note: Care must be taken to allow for any protrusions, such as windowsills, water pipes, central heating radiators etc.
Make sure that the rail is equidistant from the staircase stringer at the top and bottom steps. When you are completely satisfied that the lift carriage and seat assemblies are able to travel the entire length of the rail, unhindered by any obstruction, screw the stair brackets to the stair treads, through the carpet (if fitted), using the 16 wood screws provided.
Note: A minimum distance of 1/2" should be maintained between the back of the seat assembly and the stairway wall.
Fix the safety edge moulding to the ‘down’ side of the carriage body. Locate the stand-off screw threads in the holes in the carriage chassis (Fig.17).
WARNING! It is essential that the carriage safety edge moulding is fitted, as failure to do so could put the user at risk of personal injury.
Attach the safety edge moulding to the stand-off screws, using the two cross head type screws provided. (Fig.18/19).
Finally, where local codes dictate, affix the remote control handsets to the wall at the head and foot of the stairway. To do this, remove the battery cover and the PP9 battery from the handset and using the two screws and wall-plugs provided, fix the handset to the wall so that the three infra-red bulbs are pointing upwards, towards the ceiling.
Note: The Infra-red signal works by ‘line of sight’. Therefore the remote control must have a clear "view" of the stair lift carriage that it commands.The signal does have the ability to bounce off walls and ceilings, so the remote control does not have to be pointed directly at the stair lift - however, for optimum performance, the remote controls should be mounted, where they are visible from the stair lift.
